Leading Textile State

Maharashtra
has always been in the forefront in textiles.

Handloom
centres like Ichalkaranji, Nagpur, Solapur have
been famous since 350 years for cotton sarees,
bed covers etc.

Paithan,
a holy town on the banks of Godavari, is well-known
for ornamented silk sarees, with golden/silver
threads (jari).

Mumbai,
with 30 composite mills, was the textile capital
of India in the early 20th century: now has
many garment manufacturers - exporters.

Decentralised
powerlooms and process houses are active in
Bhiwandi, Malegaon, Ichalkaranji, Solapur: giving
40% of national production.

Amongst
the nine cotton growing states, Maharashtra
ranks second.

Maharashtra
has over 50 co-operative spinning mills, about
35% of country's capacity in co-operative spinning.

Over
16 educational and training institute in textiles-
the maximum in any state of our country.
Even
after the major restructuring of the textile
and clothing industry that took place during
1980-2000, Maharashtra retains a leading position.
